How to use a dump station
- Pay first if the property charges non-campers (WI and MI state parks: $10; IL: $5 now, $10 from 2027 per IDNR).
- Gloves on. Connect the sewer hose to the inlet before opening any valve.
- Black tank first, then gray to rinse the hose.
- Use the non-potable rinse hose for rinsing only; never fill your fresh tank from it.
- Close valves, cap, rinse the pad, move on - others are waiting.
Midwest specifics
- Many stations close mid-October to mid-May to prevent freeze damage.
- Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan DOT rest areas: no dump stations listed - plan on parks or travel centers.
- Dumping gray water on the ground is against Wisconsin state park rules.
